Learning to read with Bob Books: Beginning Readers

While packing the house a few days ago, I found this set of Beginning Readers that was hidden in one of the cupboards. I flipped through the set of books and they are very decodable for toddlers who have started learning the CVC words! Hunter is able to read some of the books by himself, with the exception of tricky words such as "the". I find that it is a good supplement for the phonics class and will be continuing to practise reading with Hunter using this set.

Hunter's N2 journey in Our Children's House Montessori

I'm back with updates about Hunter's N2 journey so far. We are quite pleased with his progress and nothing much to complain too. These are the activities that they have been doing in school: Quarterly field trip Role playing in school Making agar agar jelly in school for Mother's Day Putting in the fillings Painting Marble rolling activity Pasting activity Water transferring activity Pre-writing activity Feeding himself in school Cutting the banana on his own Bubble blowing Balancing game What a drawing! Having fruits at the playground Card making with beans Ball throwing Playing at the playground * I have deliberately not posted any group photos as some parents may be sensitive to it. I'm glad that we made the change over to this school. May Hunter continues to enjoy his pre-schooling years.

Updates: Our Children House Montessori Preschool (9 months mark)

It has been a while since I last updated about Hunter's preschool. Recently, we had a PTM and I am very glad to say that Hunter has significant improvement ever since he switched out from the POP preschool that he attended previously . Background A poll that I did previously with my family and friends showed that their preference is to put the kid near home, so that it's more convenient for fetching back and forth. We took their advice and enrolled Hunter in a nearby preschool, thinking that we can save trouble for my parents.  Everything was great for IFC and the teachers were very caring and responsive. It started going downhill when the school switched to becoming a POP preschool. It may be because of the change in environment, but Hunter started biting other kids when he went upstairs in PG. The teachers also informed that he cried uncontrollably when separated from the IFC teachers. It became so bad that Hunter was suspended from school for 2 weeks (unfortunately at a ti...

HY3252 - From Tropical Medicine to Biomedical Science

A private comment on Google+ made me thought of writing this. =P I took this module in 2011 with Dr John DiMoia as the lecturer. He is a very quirky fun guy to have as a lecturer and he showed us quite a few videos during the lectures to perk us up =D Of course, everyone wants to know how the workload is like for this module. I feel that there is not much readings compared to the other history modules (but it might still be overwhelming for people from other faculties Idk) I enjoyed going for the lectures very much and some of the tutorials are spent outside of school where we toured biopolis and TCM in AH. Maybe that's why I don't remember much about his tutorials. Haha. Unlike Peter Borschberg's lessons where answering questions is a terror in itself. Okays I admit that was not a hardworking student. The exam questions are quite cool in in my opinion. I remembered doing a question that was remotely like this, "Imagine yourself being transported to a hospit...

Review: NUR1113 (Active Ageing in Singapore)

Apparently this is a year one nursing module. This is another module which is highly bidded for, and a relatively easy module. Lectures can be skipped, as long as you read the lecture slides on your own. All the information had been pasted into the slides, rendering the lecture useless. The lecturer usually just reads from the slides. Tutorials are easy. Nothing much to prepare, and basically, they are logic questions. I remember doing a powerpoint presentation for this module. We also did random experiments in tutorials. However, one thing not good about being the minority in a close-knitted faculty means that you can't really interact with the rest of the module mates. They all have a similar timetable, meaning that you have to suit their timing. Something to consider if you are taking language modules huh.

Review: GEK 1545 (An insight into reproductive health)

This is the time of the year when all my posts about NUS modules are flooded with visitors. I guess it's good time to do a belated review of it huh. (Pardon me if my memory is not too good) I remember this module as one of the highest ever bidded module for me. The lecture and tutorial are both held in NUH itself, and it was one of the rare times that I actually went to NUS so many times in a sem. The lecturer is an Indian gynecologist, and he told us about his life story as well as went through the lecture notes. He made a lot of adult jokes though. Lecture notes are easy to read and understand. I actually still keep some of them for reference. The mid-term assignment was an essay (something like a sociology question, if you know what I mean) Overall, I think that it's an easy module. The problem is, whether you have enough points to bid for it.

WTF?!! NUSSU has at least 3.1million in reserves?!!

Okay, I know this has nothing to do with my personal life but I am really curious about how they managed to store such a huge sum of money and leaving them untouched. I know the concept of rainy day but isn't the amt abit too large?!! I admit that I usually don't bother about this kind of stuff, but this is really news to me, despite kor kor telling us that they actually have money in reserves which they don't really use. I understand the need to put the money so as to earn more revenue, but I cannot comprehend that why do we have so much in our school's reserves? If that's any indication, we have been paying for more than what we need to for the past dunno how many years, since so much of the money is not being used for our welfare. Instead, they are being stored in the bank/tied up in investments and used to "grow more money" Not to mention the amt of money NUSSU has been spending on their posters ar. I heard ridiculous stories abt it too, and I think ...

Mods for my last sem, god-willing

LAM3201 - Malay 3 HY3252 - From Tropical Medicine to Bioscience TR2201 - Entrepreneurial Marketing HY3206 - East Asian International Relations GEK2025 - Politics of Middle East HY2241 - Why history? GEK1545 - An insight into reproductive health To take my malay mod, I have to reshuffle almost all my mods. Sian. But I think it's worth it, because Cikgu Sew is teaching Malay 3 this coming sem! Yay! Just in case any of u guys want to take the modules that I'm taking, you're more than welcome to do so =) Though I seriously doubt anyone will be crazy enough to do so.

My modules for sem 1 AY2010/11

HY2253 - Christianity in World History HY3241 - Religion in the history of China and Japan LAM2201 - Malay 2 LSM1301 - General Biology NUR1113/GEM1901/SSM1206 - Active ageing in Singapore I'm quite happy to get HY2253 since it's Prof Lockhart teaching again. And apparently, there's a few pple whom I know taking this mod too, even though I don't know some of them very well. HY3241 is kinda scary about thinking about it, since I totally have no clue about China and Japan (yes, even though I have studied the language, I have not touched much on its history). And with Mark in it, I think it's a clue that it's not going to be easy... (I always score badly for the mods that I take with him. No idea why also) LAM is cool! From the class roster, it seems that there's only 12 pple taking it. Anyway, malay is something that I have always wanted to learn, so it won't be so bad, I guess. LSM1301 is going to kill me for sure. I have no experience with it at all, ...

Goodbye, Lenin

1st thing I woke up today was, shucks, it's another day. No tuition today, contrary to what I thought a few days ago. I was kind of glad, cuz I'm really really tired. I realised that I do not even have time to read the books that I want to read, because I am too short of time. The rehearsal went well. I hope that I can perform as well or even better tml, and there is a long day ahead of me tml. crazy. It's a non-stop thing. I'm watching Goodbye Lenin now, which is related to the DDR, which I am studying about in HY3209. It's a good movie, so anyone who has time or is interested can go and watch it. The plot is very fascinating. It's available on youtube. I feel weird. I'm tired. Is there any other way that I can feel better about things? Library. It's has a love-hate relationship with me.
