Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice Review

Basically, as what the title says, Batman and Superman fought each other. Period. The movie sucks. They tried to do too many things into the movie plot and it got all confusing for me. I was so bored with the slow pace of the movie that I literally dozed off. An amazing feat as I usually can sit through movies. The 2.5hrs of showtime didn't help either. There is no depth into the movie and they do a touch and go for all the characters. And the Batman isn't the kind of guy that I remembered. For those who have not watched it, please watch it only if you are are a true DC fan. The characters are slightly off from their usual selves and the plot is too lame for my liking. Spoilers: The only part is memorable is Superman wearing his boots into the bathtub.

Review: The Good Dinosaur

My friends and I were excited about this movie since it's made by Pixar but our verdict is: Quite disappointing. I expected so much out of this movie. The plot was relatively simple, which was unsurprising, but what's with the stormy weather that repeats itself again and again? It got a bit boring after a while, and it felt like we went into an alternate universe where everything is illogical. There were a few scenes which were funny though, but not enough for me to want to rewatch it again. Watch only if you have kids in your company!

Movie review: Antman

I went into the movie hall expecting nothing. I only knew that it was a Marvel character and PL was gushing all about it. The movie was quite awesome. Notice the "quite"as I was a little bored in the middle of the movie where it got a little draggy and monotonous. There are a fair bit of action scenes but not so overwhelming. I think it's a nice touch of comedy and action in it, of course with the usual bit of hollywood romance. Overall, the effects are quite good. They managed to make a good plot out of it where the good defeats the bad. The comedic moments made the show a joy to watch but watch out for a lot of those references that leave you hanging, especially if you are like me, who is not very into American stuff. I would recommend it if you are a marvel fan or you have a bit of spare time. It's quite a good stress reliever. ;)

Jurassic World movie review

The first thing I heard before I even saw the movie was that the female lead was in heels for the whole entire movie so I was fixated on her legs. And it's true. Triple-dated for this movie. I thought that I was going to fall asleep in the movie since I was dead tired on a Friday night, but the movie has enough suspense to keep me going. The plot was well paced, with a lot of horrifying scenes. I especially loved the scene where Owen said that humans, like dinosaurs, has to eat, hunt and mate. The boys are also very quick on their feet and thinking. When they managed to escape the dinosaur, they found the old Jurassic park, all with the stuff and cars intact. They managed to restart one of the cars to escape back to the current park, where they were attacked by flying bird-like dinosaurs. Even though the older boy was ogling at other girls and being very distant to his younger brother, the brotherly love they had for each other showed through when they had to work together an...

Review: 50 Shades of Grey

I admit it; the movie was a flop. This is despite me begging PL to watch the movie with me months before it came out. I was and still am intrigued by the BDSM portions of the movie. Yes, really. Quoting PL:" I will recommend it to my enemies." and "I think guys only watch it because their wives or girlfriends drag them to it." The movie was too mainstream for my taste and the chemistry between the two leads are not there at all. The sex scenes are so fake that I cringed every time they are "having sex". The porn actors and actresses are probably faking much better than the both of them. I now understand why Singapore agrees to have the uncut version; the scenes are too tame. Jaw-droppingly tame. I mean, spanking your partner on the butt is quite usual right? It's hot ;D As the film rolls, I spotted a lot of flaws in the plot. Why didn't Ana run the hell away from Christian when he showed her the playroom? Who in their correct mind would agree...

Review: Unbroken

Unbroken is about this guy, Louie Zamperini, who was one of the Olympic runners before the WWII and how he managed to survive though the war. I would say this upfront; The film is quite bias against the Japanese since it is a biography of his time through the world war. The flashback to Louie's childhood was quite unexpected as there was no warning given, but it gave us the information of how he became an Olympic runner. The battle scenes in the movie was not as gory as I thought it would be for a war movie; instead it was more of "Life of Pi" scenes when Louie and his army comrades were stranded out at sea. I think it failed the horrors of war was not captured properly in the movie, and there are random shots when the actors look really healthy even though they were supposed to be malnourished. Only snippets of his life was captured and the ending was too abrupt for my liking; they didn't mention about the girl that he had married until the end of the film, and m...

Review: Kingsman: The Secret Service

I had wanted to watch Kingsman: The Secret Service ever since I caught the trailer. The high tech scenes caught my attention even though I am not an action movie person(I hate Jackie Chan's movies) but this movie did not disappoint (maybe except for the ending). It is captivating because what happened in the movie might just very well happen in real life. The realism is there, when freebies are given to us. Are we supposed to doubt when there are freebies given to us? Will there be any hidden devices that we do not know about in the freebies? Paranoia is at the peak since we have turned anti-Islamic. I like the parts where Eggsy and the gang are training to become a Kingsman. Very psychological-based. The action scenes were not really emphasized on though, so people who like action shows may not enjoy it as much. The twist in the movie was quite unexpected and the explanation for it is not enough as usual but it didn't spoil the plot. I was disappointed with the ending ...

Review: The Wedding Ringer

The Wedding Ringer is a romantic comedy where the male lead, Doug, has to find 7 best man for his upcoming wedding within 10 days. He was recommended a Best Man Inc, where they provide specialised service to grooms who need best man and the comedy started from there. Even though there is a light beat to the movie, it invokes the theme of friendship (or the lack of it). With our busy lifestyle, who can claim to be a friend who is close enough to be your best man or bridesmaid? Another food for thought is that couples should be able to share their hopes and secrets with each other; not to keep secrets. At the end of the film, the marriage did not take place because the groom found out that he was just a tool, and love was never in the equation. These themes were wrapped among the hilarious scenes where our two lovely comedians danced together and the whole bunch of them did crazy stuff in order to make up stories for the wedding. Even if you did not manage to catch the heavier to...

Review: Vampire Academy

Vampires are all in the trend now. All the YA section are now filled with either vampire/werewolf books. Of course, I am very interested in them too =P I was quite excited when I heard that this movie was coming out but I only managed to watched it recently. And for a change, I had not read the book yet. For a film that is based on a book, I think they did it quite well. I managed to get the hang of the different terms that they used, despite being confused for the first 10-15 minutes, and the action scenes were quite good. (And I love it that not everything is action. I hate that a lot, especially if there are plots like those of Jacky Chan's movies) The love between the two friends is portrayed strongly in the movie, especially at the start when they were revealed to be on the run for two years, with Rose letting Lissa feed on her. The complications only started when they went to Vampire Academy, where the vampires and their guardians are. But life in Vampire Academy and...

Review: How to train your dragon 2

I'm a super huge cartoon movie person, so when we went over to JB today, we caught this movie. :) I am totally not disappointed. Compared to the first movie, this movie has a better plot. There are so many ups and downs scenes that I can't keep track of them all. Toothless is as cute as ever, but he can't really fly without a rider (which sucks because he nearly drowned when Hiccup was captured.)Hiccup lost his leg but he is still functioning properly, and he even invented something so that he could fly! The cinematics are awesome! And...I cried when Hiccups's dad died. However, there are so many cute scenes that made the movie enjoyable instead of an angst one. It's a great coming of age movie as Hiccup is rebellious but towards the end, he realises that no matter how great he thinks his dad is, and how useless he is, he still has to try to work towards being like his dad. A must-watch. I caught this movie at JB KSL for RM14. Two good things about w...

Review: Wolf on Wall Street

The first thing that came to my mind was: The movie is super long. In Singapore, it is classified as a R21 film, making it my first R-rated movie watched in the cinema. Truth to be told, I didn't think that I would have enjoyed it this much as 3 hours sounded a tad long to me. But I managed to watch it all without falling asleep, which is considered very good. The film depicts the life of Jordan Belfort, who rose to fame and fortune by being a very good stockbroker who eventually opened his own firm and used devious ways to make people invest their money so that they can earn from their investments, together with some insider trading blah blah blah. There were quite a few banking jargons but most of it were drugs related. The film has a typical ending, where the bad guy goes to jail and gets reformed after all the bad things that he has done. What I am impressed by is the way they tried to glamorize the sex and drug scenes initially. People are drawn to the high living life...

Review: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Synopsis : A day-dreamer escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action. When his job along with that of his co-worker are threatened, he takes action in the real world embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined. I went to KSL City with PL to catch a movie as he had this urge for a movie. We decided upon this movie as he thought that it was not bad. The scenes were beautiful, especially those scenic views of the Himalayas. However, I felt that the plot lacked substance. Somehow, it is lacking that omph that makes people go gaga over it, even though the views are fanstastic.  The plot is mundane, as Walter Mitty tries to get a girl whom he likes to go out with him. His problem is that he zones out too much. One day, he lost a photograph that was supposed to appear on the magazine cover and he traveled all over the world to search for the m...

Review: Frozen

The love of the two sisters Just watched frozen with the 2 other kids in Cathay at City Square. We managed to get student prices at RM8 each. (Yes, Singapore student cards are accepted there :D) There was a long queue despite today being a weekday. :( Probably due to the December holidays? Anyway, the animation was awesome! Anna has little freckles on her face and shoulders. There were musical parts in the film, as expected of Disney films. The plot is really simple and good. It was heartwarming (literally). Elsa(the older sister) is a young princess who has the ability to create ice/snow out of nowhere. One day, while playing with her younger sister, Anna, she accidentally froze her, and their parents went to beg the trolls to save her. Elsa, who creates the wintery scenes =D From then onwards, Elsa shuts herself up due to her lack of ability to control her power. She accidentally revealed her powers years later in public and was shunned by her own people. She...

Review: Hunger Games - Catching Fire

PL and I went to catch Hunger Games - Catching fire in JB, KSL City (MBO). Ticket price is 14RM each. It's cheap! And the seat arm can be taken up, so that we can sit closer to each other =P I had already watched the first movie, and read the book a few times, so I knew what to expect, but PL, who has not watched nor read it, was quite ok with the movie, so I guess it is not too bad. It is really for Hunger Games fans (or Battle Royale) because the concept is very similar. There was not as much bloodshed, but Mags dying really got me weeping. The 2hr plus movie is a breeze to sit through, and I was not ready to leave the seat despite the ending of the show (even though I needed to piss badly). The ending of the show was just to abrupt for me to accept it. How can that be the ending?!!! Come on! Get the next one out quick!! P.S: I think Katniss looks fatter in this movie than the previous one. She probably got fat sitting in the Victors' village and co...

Review: The Croods (2013)

Set in prehistoric times, Grug is the over-protective patriarch of a tiny Neanderthal clan who insists they stay huddled together in their cave, so they don't risk being eaten alive by wild animals outside. However, his rebellious teenage daughter Eep is desperate to explore the world, and she finally gets her chance when the family is forced to abandon their home in the wake of a deadly earthquake. Their guide is a fearless young man named Guy who has discovered this cool new thing called "fire" as they set out to find a new home. The theme - Fearing to change is a bad thing - is reinforced throughout the whole movie. Everything that Grug did was bad, as he wanted to continue hi old way of life, which is to hide out in caves. Yet, the rest of the family embraced the change that came along the way, and they thrived with it. Despite the theme being written all over the movie, the movie plot itself is commendable. There are many light-hearted moments where simplicity gl...

Review: Nausicaa of the Valley of the wind

I love Studio Glibli's works, where themes are always of environmental issues; something which is close to my heart. I took quite long to find this show, after being introduced to Miyazaki's work in university. This was the first of Miyazaki's series and it was perfect. The story was well developed, and the theme of environmentalism was brought about clearly to the audience. Granted, the animation was old, but it didn't deter me from enjoying the show. The anti-war elements in the film also appealed to me, and it was in line with his personal conviction that war should not happen. I was touched by the interdependence of the creatures and humans in this war torn world, with Nausicaa trying her best to meditate between the two world. By showing care and concern to others, she was able to penetrate into the world of the ohmus, whose fury which could have destroyed her home. The sound effect was awesome, together with the pacing of the story. I teared during the ...

Movie Review: The Rooftop (Jay Chou)

Okays, first of all, I'm a Jay Chou Fan =P He mentioned that he wanted to do a musical movie that makes sense. But..the movie don't really make a lot of sense. There's a lot of singing and dancing inside, and full of Jay Chou's flavor. He is still his usual shy self, with non-existent kissing. >.< But it is definitely more mature than Initial D. And the concept of the rooftop people and the outside world is quite interesting. Just that.. the plot is a little too shallow for my liking. I am super disappointed by the ending. What's up with the racing car scene and the kidnapping of people? And most of all, why the art gallery?!! Verdict: Can watch the front part of the movie, but skip the ending.

Movie Review: The Lone Ranger

Johnny Depp is in this one! I admit I'm a fan of him and his quirky mannerisms so I love this movie. However, I cannot say that he is a good actor because he acts exactly the same as when he was in Pirates of the Caribbean. The movie plot is quite interesting but some scenes are just too coincidental in my opinion. Add in the flashback scenes and they do not really make much sense to me. Btw, there is a gore scene inside. Verdict: Go only if you are a Johnny Depp Fan.

Movie Review: Pacific Rim

I'm not exactly a fan of action movie, but quite surprisingly, I did not fall asleep during the movie. It feels like a Japanese-American plot, where they tried to infuse asian elements into the movie, and try to make fun out of it. The Hong Kongish setting is an epic fail. Violence in the movie is expected, but the flurry of actions that accompanies it made me feel like I had a headache in the middle of the movie. I probably shouldn't have watched it in Imax, because the alignment felt a little out. Other than that, the action parts were good. The romance in the film was a tad too predictable though. Connection between the lead and his co-pilot; how predictable can the plot get? Especially when his co-pilot is a female. On the whole, the film is too serious for my liking, and there were too many tension points IMO. But as a girl who likes cartoons more than action flicks, I guess it was not too bad a movie.

Movie Review: Epic

Caught it in Malacca on the day of release. I would say that the title is very misleading. I went in without knowing the plot of the movie, and enjoyed it tremendously. The style of the movie is similar to Miyazaki Hayao, or so it appears to me. The little girl, M.K, was in a forest looking for Ozzie when the forest fairy died and passed the life of the forest to her. It was up to her to protect this life before it blooms in the brightness of the moon, and give birth to a new forest fairy who will protect the forest from decay, aka their enemies. She realises what her role was when it came to the climax of the plot, and she seeks out her dad who will help to restore the balance. She ended up making friends with the leafmen. This delicate line of balance of the good and bad, which Studio Glibli likes to emphasise. I love the humor of it, as well as the colour schemes of the movie (I'm a sucker for colourful and beautiful animations) haha. Makes me wish that I am living tog...
