HE MUST RELY ON HIS TALENTS IN THE BEDROOM...
Anthony Hamilton cannot help it. The way he looks, the way he lives, his past-it all conspires to make him a man men fear, women desire. His name fills gossip circles in a seemingly endless, lurid drama. But he's never forgotten the only woman he's ever truly wanted-yet could never have.
TO MAKE HER FALL IN LOVE.
Celia Reece knew Anthony well before he forged his scandalous reputation. The young man she remembers spoke kindly to her, made her laugh, and his devilish good looks always quickened her pulse. But Celia's mother had other designs-designs that didn't include marriage to Anthony. Now, Celia is widowed, and her mother is intent on finding her a new husband. Refusing to let any obstacle stand in his path this time, Anthony sets out to win Celia's heart by using the same skills that made him London's most irresistible rake...
The first time I set my eyes on this book, I thought that it would be another normal historical romance book, where the rakes are reformed after they fell in love with the girl. I was wrong.
Anthony cannot even be considered a rake, and it was only his reputation which led him to his downfall. He loved Celia even before she married and it was not just because of her money. Of course, there are the usual obstacles that hindered him, like the disapproval from Celia's mother and such.
There are a few funny scenes that made me laughed out loud.
- Celia insisting on not having a marriage even after everyone saw her on Anthony (literally)
- The moments where they met coincidentally (How many times must they meet out in the garden?)
The whole plot makes me ponder about the existence of love; whether someone could have jumped into the throes of love and survive intact. Marriage with the right person, right personality is the key, but without the perfect fit, how could one be able to cope with the loveless marriage that will invariably drain all the energy and life out of him?
The subplot is a little weird and seems rushed to me. And Anthony is someone who earns his keep, which probably irritated Celia's mother since gentlemen are not supposed to engage in trade. (And Anthony invests money which are gotten from ladies o.O) and he wins cards. This is truly a creative trade.
I like the part where Anthony refuses his grandfather's legacy. It proves that he does not need his grandfather at all, even though in the end, it hinted at him accepting it. A man to my liking.
Score: 6/10
