Like always, I didn't realise that it is a start to a series until I googled it.
I was captivated by the interesting combination => boarding school + magic.
There are few books which have such plots, and I'm a sucker for them. In addition, there are Vikings and all the Greek mythology references throughout the book, and who could resist them?
So, I picked up the book and brought it home to read.
First, I didn't have much common sense when it comes to plots. I like realistic ones as well as unrealistic ones, and this book falls under the unrealistic category. i mean, magic and common sense doesn't match right? I kind of assume that the target audience for the book is maybe like 12-ish, since the phrasings used are simple, and easy to understand. I'm glad because I don't have to read between the lines to catch the meanings (lazy me)
The story started with Gwen, the "Gypsy girl" being an outsider in her elite school, and it talks about how she is using her gift to earn pocket money. It is a clique start (minus point) but when it moves to the part where there are spartans and Vikings in the same school, I was hooked. (Really hope that it will come out as a movie so that I can ogle at those hot bodies)
The whole book was about Gwen trying to help Jasmine (some girl that she found dead in the library) and it ended up horribly because Jasmine is one of the evil ones who is trying to bring back chaos.Of course, the friendship that she had formed with the Valkyrie helped her in the quest, and it all ended nicely with her getting hooked with a dangerous and handsome Spartan guy.
The awkwardness of the romance is quite cute, but anyone above the age of 17 probably would feel that it is an immature type of romance/hook-up or whatever. But I like.
Score: 7/10
